Gina Carano's firing: Ignorance is bliss, but we ain’t ignorant
Thursday Feb 18, 2021
Thursday Feb 18, 2021
Buckle up! For the 66th episode of the WhoDatJedi podcast, your hosts -- Aaron Svoboda (@Aaron_Svoboda), Alfredo Narvaez (@NOLA_Fredo) and David Gladow (@davegladow) -- tackle the controversy surrounding Gina Carano's firing from "The Mandalorian." For longtime listeners of the show, there should be little surprise that the group condemns hate speech and therefore falls into a stance of supporting Disney's decision to part ways with the actress. But the situation does spark a ton of discussion. When considering tolerance, where does one draw the line, both as a company trying to make money, but also as a consumer trying to do the ethical thing? Is cancel culture a problem, or does it have its place? And does boycotting a show or movie -- for any reason -- even make fundamental sense? Where does idealism take a backseat to practicality? Give us a listen and let us know what you think.

What is going on in WandaVision? Let's discuss!
Wednesday Feb 10, 2021
Wednesday Feb 10, 2021
On this, the 65th episode of the WhoDatJedi podcast, your hosts -- Aaron Svoboda (@Aaron_Svoboda), Alfredo Narvaez (@NOLA_Fredo) and David Gladow (@davegladow) -- briefly talk a little Star Wars news before switching gears entirely and dive into the Disney+ series "WandaVision," the MCU's first big attempt at pulling its movie characters over to the small screen. They look at the big picture, trying to decipher what kind of far-reaching effects the show might have on the MCU (as well as how well it leans into what's previously been established). They also look at the current lay of the land in regards to the characters, who might make an appearance next, and what the recent cameo really means. What does all of this mean within the context of the source material? Looking at both the state of this show and "The Mandalorian," the biggest takeaway of all might be that it's a good time to be a fan of creative, daring work ... because that's what we're getting.

On the 63rd episode of the WhoDatJedi podcast, your hosts -- Aaron Svoboda (@Aaron_Svoboda), Alfredo Narvaez (@NOLA_Fredo) and David Gladow (@davegladow) -- debate the best lightsaber fights in the entirety of the Star Wars universe put to film. The saga movies obviously figure heavily, but the duels and conflicts from the animated universe also make an appearance. The flip side of that coin is the lightsaber action that just didn't quite hit par. What is the greatest duel in Star Wars history? What battles might have escaped your notice as being amazing? Topics covered include why the krewe seems to fit the spirit of both Mardi Gras and nerd fandom so well, how it's grown so large, and of course, the story of Peter Mayhew's sock. For the 61st episode of the WhoDatJedi podcast, your hosts -- Aaron Svoboda (@Aaron_Svoboda), Alfredo Narvaez (@NOLA_Fredo) and David Gladow (@davegladow) -- provide a brand new commentary track, this time for "The Phantom Menace." It's a fun conversation, covering the problems with the movie and the mixed reaction it has experienced, but also leaning into the positive traits the movie has ... and some of the how of why the movie is the way it is. What's the real meaning of the title "The Phantom Menace?" Is the unorthodox structure a weakness or a strength? Is the pod race sequence vital or disposable? Tuesday Dec 15, 2020
Tuesday Dec 15, 2020
On the 57th episode of the WhoDatJedi podcast, your hosts -- Aaron Svoboda (@Aaron_Svoboda), Alfredo Narvaez (@NOLA_Fredo) and David Gladow (@davegladow) -- dive into Chapter 15 ("The Believer") of "The Mandalorian," the live-action Star Wars series on Disney+. The major topic of discussion on this week's show centers around Din's journey away from binary thinking, and how the motley crew around him is helping him through that -- particularly in the form of the character of Mayfield. Star Wars itself has often been very black and white, and this episode represents a shift in that thinking ... to mirror Din's. (Also, who is "The Believer?" Well, it's complicated.)

It's a Mandalorian-heavy discussion, as one might expect with the return of Boba Fett taking center stage. The group also talks about Din's continued journey toward fatherhood (or a rejection of that), who Grogu might have been talking with, if Star Wars is better off in Disney's hands, and why for Dave this is the best episode of the series yet.

One of the bigger talking points is of course the live-action debut of beloved character Ahsoka. They dive into the casting, the look, the portrayal, and the overall effectiveness of the performance. They also get into the meaning of the title of this chapter, and how it relates to Ahsoka herself. Beyond that, they speak to the massive reveals that occurred this week, the death of a Star Wars legend (rest in peace, David Prowse), and what we desire to see more of within the fandom.

Wednesday Nov 25, 2020
Wednesday Nov 25, 2020
This is the 53rd episode of the WhoDatJedi podcast. Your hosts -- Aaron Svoboda (@Aaron_Svoboda), Alfredo Narvaez (@NOLA_Fredo) and David Gladow (@davegladow) -- review and dissect Chapter 12, "The Siege" of "The Mandalorian," the live-action Star Wars series on Disney+. This episode marks a welcome return of recurring characters Cara Dune and Greef Karga on the planet Nevarro (though if you look closer, each character seems to be on slightly different trajectories at the moment). What the chapter was also big on was some deeper cuts for longtime fans (which the group broke down for you) and some teases for future adventures (predictions abound!). Dave Filoni's influence continues to be felt in the way the show continues to fold in other movies, TV, books and video games, but also in the way he seems to have taken on the role of "caretaker" of Star Wars -- and the group also discusses that.

Brittany talks about the process of creating her story, from her pitch, to the writing/creation (including how she named her new characters), to the editing ... it's a fun story to hear! After that, the group settles in to discuss the latest Mandalorian-heavy chapter of everyone's favorite Disney+ show.
