Live movie discussion: ‘The Last Jedi’
Friday Jul 24, 2020
Friday Jul 24, 2020
We're back with another commentary track! On the 37th episode of the WhoDatJedi podcast, your hosts -- Aaron Svoboda (@Aaron_Svoboda), Alfredo Narvaez (@NOLA_Fredo) and David Gladow (@davegladow) -- tackle "The Last Jedi" with a live, running commentary track of the movie (because everyone loves the people who talk through the whole movie). They look at why the movie is so divisive for fans, speaking to such issues as its humor, the visual stylings, the story elements, and the deeper themes. Is this the most challenging Star Wars movie? The most feminist? And does it do Luke Skywalker dirty? Sync up with the movie or listen without ... but either way, enjoy!

Rebels Season 2: Is this the best season of Star Wars TV?
Friday Jul 17, 2020
Friday Jul 17, 2020
On this, the 36th episode of the WhoDatJedi podcast, your hosts -- Aaron Svoboda (@Aaron_Svoboda), Alfredo Narvaez (@NOLA_Fredo) and David Gladow (@davegladow) -- dive into Season 2 of "Star Wars Rebels," the animated series that takes place between Episodes III & IV. Rather than going episode by episode, the discussion delves into specific topics like the continued inclusion of classic characters, Season 2's overall variance from Season 1, including its devotion to "Clone Wars" legacy storylines (at the exclusion of new characters?), and which episodes work the best -- cough, "Twilight of the Apprentice," cough -- as well as which ones don't (space whales). Your hosts also relate the topic back to the news of the new series "The Bad Batch" and tackle the issues surrounding digitizing Star Wars content for Disney+.

Star Wars author (and New Orleans resident) Brittany N. Williams (@BrittanyActs) joins us for the 35th episode of the WhoDatJedi podcast! Your hosts -- Aaron Svoboda (@Aaron_Svoboda), Alfredo Narvaez (@NOLA_Fredo) and David Gladow (@davegladow) -- try very hard to contain themselves and not pepper the contributor to the forthcoming Star Wars short story collection, “From a Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back” with a ton of spoiler-y questions. Toward that end, the group discusses questions of representation in Star Wars and why it matters, what Williams' creative process looks like, the generational divide among Star Wars fans, and how she defines her own personal Star Wars experience. This is one of our coolest interviews yet!

How much fan service is too much?
Thursday Jul 02, 2020
Thursday Jul 02, 2020
On the 34th episode of the WhoDatJedi podcast, your hosts -- Aaron Svoboda (@Aaron_Svoboda), Alfredo Narvaez (@NOLA_Fredo) and David Gladow (@davegladow) -- are joined by special guest Eric Redding (@NolesAndPhins) to talk fandoms and fan service. Eric contributes to a soccer podcast, "Five at the Back," so the group delved into some sports discussion, specifically how sports fandoms can resemble pop culture fandoms, but the main topic of the show was a simple question with a difficult answer: How much fan service is too much? The group discussed which of the Star Wars films have more fan service than the others, how much of a back-and-forth the creators should have with the fans, and what constitutes "good" fan service. This show is literally for the fans! (Well, it's about the fans ... same difference, right?)

Why is 'Rogue One' just the absolute best?
Friday Jun 26, 2020
Friday Jun 26, 2020
Inspired by some fun online "Rogue One" discussion, your hosts -- Aaron Svoboda (@Aaron_Svoboda), Alfredo Narvaez (@NOLA_Fredo) and David Gladow (@davegladow) -- dedicate the 33rd episode of the WhoDatJedi podcast to "Rogue One." The guys touch a little on the fan service present in the movie and relate that back to the most recent episode of "Disney Gallery." But they also tackle several bigger questions about 'Rogue One" as well. Is it an essential piece of Star Wars? How does the relationship between Cassian and Jyn work? Is the Force a welcome presence here? What character would you save if you could? And why is K-2SO the best? They dive into the good (there's so much!) and the bad (yes, there is some!) in a substantial conversation.

On this, the 32nd episode of the WhoDatJedi podcast, your hosts -- Aaron Svoboda (@Aaron_Svoboda), Alfredo Narvaez (@NOLA_Fredo) and David Gladow (@davegladow) -- talk about the cancellation of Star Wars Celebration. Aaron calls upon his experience as an attendee to offer perspective on the decision ... and whether it was ultimately the right call. They also review the newest addition to the Star Wars universe -- "Jedi Temple Challenge" -- which is very much a kids show, but still has some appeal for adults. Finally, they look at the latest episode of "Disney Gallery." This episode dealt with the music composition for "The Mandalorian," and the guys discuss how much this music varies from traditional Star Wars music ... but that it also draws inspiration from some pretty famous westerns.

Rebels Season 1 and Star Wars crossovers: Is this the way?
Friday Jun 12, 2020
Friday Jun 12, 2020
On the 31st episode of the WhoDatJedi podcast, your hosts -- Aaron Svoboda (@Aaron_Svoboda), Alfredo Narvaez (@NOLA_Fredo) and David Gladow (@davegladow) -- dig into Season 1 of "Star Wars Rebels," the animated series that takes place between Episodes III & IV. They talk about how good of a job the first season does of pulling viewers in right away, establishing its characters (and developing them), and pulling in existing characters. On that last point, they also discuss a rumored crossover movie involving a few fan favorites, and why that may NOT be the best concept to pursue. There's lots of praise to go around for the creators of this modern Disney Star Wars universe ... but there are also questions about what those creators can and should be doing going forward. Buckle in for our biggest episode yet.

It's the 30th episode of the WhoDatJedi podcast! On this episode, your hosts -- Aaron Svoboda (@Aaron_Svoboda), Alfredo Narvaez (@NOLA_Fredo) and David Gladow (@davegladow) -- are joined by special guest Scott Colesby (@ScottColesby) to celebrate and discuss the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which Aaron JUST finished watching. They share their thoughts on the whole giant experiment starting with what a surprise the first "Ironman" was, and how well the story ultimately paid off in "Avengers: End Game." How does the series compare to the Star Wars saga? They offer some thoughts on that and also share their Top 3 and Bottom 3 rankings of the MCU films. How did "Thor: Ragnarok" make both the "best of" and "worst of" lists? Why did literally everyone have "Ironman 2" in the bottom? And which "Avengers" movie should be considered the best, and why?

Why you should be watching 'Star Wars Rebels' (no spoilers)

Friday May 29, 2020
As behind-the-scenes content from "The Mandalorian" continues to roll out, your hosts -- Aaron Svoboda (@Aaron_Svoboda), Alfredo Narvaez (@NOLA_Fredo) and David Gladow (@davegladow) -- tackle that material, but they also turn their attention to another Star Wars animated series in the wake of the conclusion of "Clone Wars." On this, the 29th episode of the WhoDatJedi podcast, they devote much of the show to spoiler-free talk of "Rebels," the animated series that takes place post-Clone Wars prior to "A New Hope." What are the strengths of the show? Why should people watch? Why are these characters so compelling? Are there good reasons to revisit it if you've already watched? And why do your hosts love it SO MUCH? Give a listen for some answers!

They really try to tackle the question of why Gen X in particular has such an affinity for this movie, how it succeeds (and even how it sometimes fails), what its impact and relation to the rest of the series is, and how it reads differently to an adult vs. a child. Friday May 15, 2020
Friday May 15, 2020
On the 27th episode of the WhoDatJedi podcast, your hosts -- Aaron Svoboda (@Aaron_Svoboda), Alfredo Narvaez (@NOLA_Fredo) and David Gladow (@davegladow) -- are joined by special guest Michelle Hunter (@MichelleHunter), a crime reporter for The Times-Picayune | New Orleans Advocate (and a Star Wars super fan). After discussing the latest "Mandalorian" news and notes, they get into some of the more hilarious stories Michelle has covered (including a wacky Star Wars-related one) before settling into some good old Expanded Universe discussion. When Disney decided to move away from the old EU and rebrand it as "Legends" material in favor of new canon, it left a whole lot of fans disappointed ... and in some cases devastated. We look at the old EU material through the eyes of its fans, discuss its various merits (including specific recommendations for people wanting to check it out), and make the case that there's a place for passionate debate about our content within the fandom.

An emotional ending to The Clone Wars
Friday May 08, 2020
Friday May 08, 2020
End, The Clone Wars have. On the 26th episode of the WhoDatJedi podcast, your hosts -- Aaron Svoboda (@Aaron_Svoboda), Alfredo Narvaez (@NOLA_Fredo) and David Gladow (@davegladow) -- react to an event-filled May the Fourth. That day featured several big news drops (including the confirmation of Taika Waititi helming a new Star Wars film), the debut of a behind-the-scenes docu-series about "The Mandalorian" called "Disney Gallery," and of course the emotional final episode of "The Clone Wars." What does the "Clone Wars" ultimately tell us about Star Wars' past -- does it enhance the material (especially the prequels) that's already there? And what does "Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian" hint at for Star Wars' future? We're at a reflection point in Star Wars, with things ending and new things beginning, and it makes for a far-reaching conversation on this week's show.

In addition to some initial "Clone Wars" talk, the group dives into the history of this particular collecting niche and get into the psychology of what makes it a fun hobby today. What are the benefits of collecting? You might know some of the basics already (those are covered for newbies like Dave), but do you know just HOW big this world is? The best musical moments in Star Wars

As we mourn the cancellation of Jazz Fest on the 24th episode of the WhoDatJedi podcast, your hosts -- Aaron Svoboda (@Aaron_Svoboda), Alfredo Narvaez (@NOLA_Fredo) and David Gladow (@davegladow) -- tackle the important question of what musical moments in Star Wars hit the hardest. Where do the musical wizardry of John Williams and the film-making talents of the various Star Wars directors mesh gorgeously, either in elevating scenes that might not have worked otherwise or in making the already great into something sublime. We each name our three favorite moments, list a ton of alternates, and basically just gush over the music of the Star Wars movies for the entire episode.
